Honoring Susan & 10 years of TLA

Tonight from 6-8pm there will be an appreciation party for Susan Sides, the garden guru at The Lord’s Acre for the past 10 years who is going on sabbatical.

Here are some words from Susan:  “For ten years more, I’ve been doing work I passionately love and believe in at The Lord’s Acre – thanks to you. This spring I’ll be taking a sabbatical to do something I love even more, helping care for our first grandchild. Over time, people have associated me with The Lord’s Acre. I don’t. I associate it with all of you. I realized then that I have been a garden conductor. I had a vision for what needed to be done to create something meaningful and found people who were far more talented than I to work together to make it possible. For ten years I have watched this vision come to life, thanks to the thousands of folks who have donated, volunteered, or worked on the board – all doing things I’m not the least bit capable of. It’s been an honor and a gift to share this vision and watch you – watch everyone together – make it a reality.”  Come out and wish Susan well on her next endeavors.

A big community work day to kick start the season at our Grove Street and the Elder and Sage Gardens downtown (BeLoved is the main community partner of this garden)!

Come out on this Earth Day weekend to be the change! Bring veggies plants, gloves, gardening tools for planting!  Bring your carpentry skills and help finish the ramp for friends in wheelchairs to garden at the Elder and Sage Gardens. We will finish the day sharing about our BeLoved Tiny Home Village and the work of Human and Environmental Sustainability for that project and some tiny art making!  This is a kid-friendly project!

Meet at 1 pm  at BeLoved 39 Grove Street to begin the day working on the Grove Street Gardens! We will have an Easter egg hunt in the garden! We will be moving to the Elder and Sage Garden on Page Ave downtown at 2:30 pm

In the midst of a rapidly gentrifying City, in the midst of the concrete and asphalt, we build gardens. In vacant, broken, and barren spaces, we practice resurrection! In the face of climate change, we work for sustainability. In the midst of food deserts for our elders, we plant food. In the face of a segregated society, we build community!

POLLINATORS GARDEN & HONEY BEE CLASS

Spring Mountain Community Center will offer a Pollinators Garden & Honey Bee Class and discussion on April 20, 2019.

The class will run from 10am to Noon. Ricky Manning and Rose Bruce will be the speakers. They will discuss Native Pollinators and how important they are to our survival, the Food chain and the ecology of our planet.

Manning and Bruce will offer ways to help and what we can plant and do to benefit the pollinators. A tour of the community center property and discussion of future plans for a Pollinators Garden to add beauty to our homes and food for our little friends who work so hard is scheduled as part of the event.

The honey bee portion of the day will inform us about the struggles honey bees are experiencing currently. How we can help and what we can do as a husbandry of the bees will be offered. Did you know Honey Bees are considered livestock just the same as cows, horses, pigs and poultry in North Carolina?

Come out and learn some facts and gain knowledge of the fascinating world of bees. This is a free event. Hope to see you there. For more information on the presentations, call Ricky Manning, Lick Log Branch Apiaries at 828 275-2486.
