Asheville Buncombe Food Security Reparations Coalition
Since spring 2021, the Asheville Buncombe Food Policy Council has convened a group of local Black leaders, representatives from Asheville’s Legacy Neighborhoods and community organizations, and other stakeholders to determine reparations recommendations for the City of Asheville and Buncombe County to address harms caused to food security in Asheville’s Black neighborhoods by urban renewal policies.
Through significant research, community engagement, and input gathering efforts, the Asheville Buncombe Food Security Reparations Coalition developed a Phase 1 Report in the summer of 2021 presenting a roadmap for the process of determining recommendations. In Phase 2, the Coalition hired local community organizer, artist, and racial equity coach Phyllis Utley as its coordinator and transitioned to operating under the fiscal sponsorship of Eagle Market Streets Development Corp.
Background information on the history of the Food Security Reparations Project and the Coalition is available in this Project Description.
