In addition to facilitating cooking and garden educational activities with students at Hot Springs Elementary School, we connect with our community in two important ways. First, we invite the community to join us for bi-weekly Gather and Garden days. People of all ages and abilities are invited to come help mulch, weed, harvest, plant, and connect. This cuts down on maintenance hours, gives us the opportunity to answer community questions about gardening, share our knowledge, and promote healthy organic garden practices. The second thing we do to connect is we donate 100% of the food grown on-site. Students, families, and school staff are always invited to come harvest what’s in season, and we do send food home with students after programming. All produce that is not harvested by students and staff is donated to local food distribution centers, especially through summer months. The addition of fresh, local produce that has been grown in part by the youth of our community is a valuable contribution in our area, as fresh produce is difficult to come by.
