St. Paul’s Missionary Baptist Church (170 Fayetteville St, Asheville, NC 28806) Looking to extend your harvest and eat from your garden throughout the year? In this class we’ll explore every season in the garden and how to build a plan that helps to maximize our yield and minimize our efforts. We’ll also be exploring seed starting, crop planning, companion planting, food preservation, and pest management with plants. This workshop will be taught by Alex Bergdahl. They will have a variety of annual and perennial flowers, herbs, and veggies, including Vance-grown peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, basil, dill, and squash. All proceeds go to the Vance Elementary Peace Garden, where kids learn about food from seed to plate! The seed library is located at the Burton St. Recreation Center at the end of the hallway to the left near the exit sign. The tool library is located at the Patchwork Urban Farms Pearson location (located at 408 Pearson Dr.) For those interested in borrowing items from the Tool Library contact Isa Whitaker directly prior to getting the item/s out of the library. Other Community Events Asheville GreenWorks, the organization working to preserve and protect Asheville’s urban forest and rivers through waste reduction and recycling, tree planting, litter cleanup projects, and educational programming, is excited to announce a new lineup of free tree workshops. In an effort to protect Asheville’s trees from damage and removal, the community events will convey the value of urban forests and teach best care practices. Beginning February 19 and running through March 28, GreenWorks will host two series of six workshops. The workshops will take place on Tuesdays, 6PM-7:30PM, Individuals are welcome to drop in for one or attend all of these workshops. March 5 – Tree Establishment, Planting and Maintenance March 12 – Proper Pruning and Choosing an Arborist March 19 – Maintenance Requirements for Urban Trees March 26 – Tree Protection in Asheville The second series of workshops are for individuals who are interested in becoming Neighborhood Tree Keepers, serving in an ongoing role as a resource on trees in their communities. This training series will take place on Thursdays, 6pm-8pm, and will cover advanced principles of tree biology, planting, risk assessment, care and maintenance and tree protection during construction. Participants are required to attend all six workshops to be eligible for a mini-grant for a neighborhood tree project in the spring. PLANT PASS-ALONG WHEN? Saturday, March 30th from 10am-2 pm WHERE? 662 Haywood Road (the empty lot across from Ingles) “Spring is coming at last! Gardeners all over town are poking their heads out, shaking off their gloves, looking for extra pots so they can dig and divide plants to give away. It’s TIME again for the West Asheville Garden Stroll’s Plant Pass-Along! All Welcome! Bring plants of all kinds to share, seeds too, labelled if possible. It’s NOT required to bring something to get something. We will have LOTS. AND if you are community minded and love gardens, consider becoming part of our organizing committee. We have a streamlined process and are a friendly bunch. No stress. First meeting is in April in the West Asheville library community room. Date will be posted soon. The 11th annual stroll will be 9/14/19.”  POLLINATORS GARDEN & HONEY BEE CLASS Spring Mountain Community Center will offer a Pollinators Garden & Honey Bee Class and discussion on April 20, 2019. The class will run from 10am to Noon. Ricky Manning and Rose Bruce will be the speakers. They will discuss Native Pollinators and how important they are to our survival, the Food chain and the ecology of our planet. Manning and Bruce will offer ways to help and what we can plant and do to benefit the pollinators. A tour of the community center property and discussion of future plans for a Pollinators Garden to add beauty to our homes and food for our little friends who work so hard is scheduled as part of the event. The honey bee portion of the day will inform us about the struggles honey bees are experiencing currently. How we can help and what we can do as a husbandry of the bees will be offered. Did you know Honey Bees are considered livestock just the same as cows, horses, pigs and poultry in North Carolina? Come out and learn some facts and gain knowledge of the fascinating world of bees. The City is now accepting applications for their Asheville Edibles program. As of 2018, Bountiful Cities has contracted with the City to manage this program. The program allows citizens to start edible gardens on parcels of City land located in various areas of town. There is no cost to lease the land. All you need are helping hands. More info/Applications available here. Elder & Sage Community Gardens is the first garden group in the Asheville Edibles Program. They opened their gates on June 1, 2017 and have successfully utilized the space at 33-35 Page Avenue for the growing of food, pollinators and community.
