What's a Food HUB?

Community Food Hub will be the first of its kind in Buncombe County

​Bountiful Cities is growing in the heart of West Asheville thanks to the support and generosity of local resident, Robert Wood. In December 2018, Mr. Wood donated a one-acre tract of land  to Bountiful Cities. Located near Haywood Road in the Falconhurst community this teaching/working urban farm school will provide a large growing space for both preservation and food production. It will continue to be farmed by Sunil Patel of Patchwork Urban Farms. The mission is to support farming activities, increase educational opportunities, and promote community engagement around urban farming.

Bountiful Cities is planning the construction of a multi-use community pavilion on the property to support the working farm: the Community Food Hub pavilion. The pavilion design includes an open air main floor for community gatherings and educational events, a value-added kitchen, farm processing and storage space, and community shared cold storage space for urban agricultural producers.

The Community Food Hub will be the first of its kind in Buncombe County with a mission to serve the county’s community gardens and current and prospective urban farmers. The pavilion structure will be situated in the same location where the original historic barn stood on the land providing a valuable link to the property’s history as a working farm and the Falconhurst community’s historic involvement in farming.
